A Fan's Barbaro videos E-mail

First, here are a couple of Barbaro's pre-Derby races.

A couple of weeks before Kentucky Derby 132, I began to put together some viral promotional videos, just as a fan showing some enthusiasm and enterprise for horse racing.

It was a great race, they looked like the X-Men of race horses because all of them had unique and powerful abilities that would challenge eachother. The front runners like Keyed Entry and Sinister Minister who could run away with it, the deep closers like Jazil and Steppenwolfer who could come from way behind to steal it down the stretch. The mysterious newer challengers who could have been sitting on the big race that would make their names known around the world.

Barbaro not only went into the race undefeated, but everyone was also very impressed with his workouts the week before the Derby. I'll never forget his long strides--powerful but effortless. He looked invincible.

I manged to squeeze in some time to make another promo for the Preakness Stakes. I did see alot of promise in Bernardini. He only had a couple of races under his belt, but it was the way he ran those races so professionally that earned my confidence in him. Still, like many fans I was rooting for Barbaro to take the Preakness, and ultimately claim the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes.

Barbaro had a strong and heroic presence about him, not only with his looks but his behaviour. Before the Preakness race he was very excited, and he sort of created a thrilling but nervous aura about him. It's always exciting to watch a race even before the starting gate has opened, and you watch with tremendous anticipation as the warriors head to their posts--some calmly, others about ready to raise hell. Barbaro raised fans' nervousness to an all-time high before the race. Even before he broke through the gate prematurely, the way he bucked around excitedly before the race made you concerned about him hurting himself.

Barbaro's accident at the Preakness had a strong effect on me. I felt very ill and wasn't able to sleep or eat the rest of the weekend. I began putting together this tribute video, not knowing if he was going to survive surgery the day after the Preakness. When he did emerge, it sounded like he was in very healthy spirits. He was eating, standing, walking, and there was talk that he had noticed some mares. I finished the video, believing that if any horse could get through such a devastating injury, it was Barbaro--who I began to call "The Bold and the Brave".

By late 2006 Barbaro's original injury was well healed. the laminitis he was struck with in July was well managed and the afflicted hoof was growing back. There was talk of him leaving the hospital to somewhere like Kentucky Horse Park. In this video from New Bolton they even mention making it look like his farewell to the hospital.

To see Barbaro's gutsy love for winning was inspiring, and his courageous spirit throughout his recovery left us with something even more meaningful than a Triple Crown. I think if any horse racing fan ever needs strength, they'll remember how Barbaro stood strong and walked on.
