KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is stable and comfortable following recent acute discomfort after a cast was applied to his left leg last week in an effort to re-align the coffin bone.
“Barbaro’s comfort improved considerably following the procedure on Saturday morning,” said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. “He has been standing and moving around his stall well enough that sling support has not been added since. His appetite has improved and his vital signs are stable. Overall, we are pleased with his progress following the setback to his left hind foot.”
Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of Penn’s George D. Widener Hospital at New Bolton Center.
The next update will be posted on Thursday, January 18, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.
The New Bolton Center and Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, will be recieving a Special 2006 Eclipse Award from the Horse Racing media. Although there was alot of excitement in previous weeks about the possibility of Barbaro being able to leave the hospital, Roy Jackson says after Barbaro's recent discomfort, "It is a real lesson in taking things one day at a time. Moving him has been put on hold for awhile, but hopefully one day he will be able to move on to somewhere else.”
