Barbaro's resting place is undecided, but the Kentucky Derby Museum has invited his owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, to lay him to rest beside four other Kentucky Derby winners.
The current grave sites in the Museum's garden honor Kentucky Derby winners Sunny's Halo (1983), Carry Back (1961), Swaps (1955) and Broker's Tip (1933) .
Barbaro's body is no longer at New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania, with Dr. Dean Richardson saying Tuesday "I've been getting up before six every morning for the last eight months to look at the horse. And he's not there. It's kind of tough." Barbaro's final resting place has yet to be announced, and Barbaro could also rest somewhere else, such as the Jackson's Lael Stables.
UPDATED January 31: Barbaro was cremated. The traditional burial for race horses is in the manner of "Head, Hooves, and Heart". A rare honor of being buried whole was bestowed on 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, who also died after suffering from laminitis in his retirement and unrelated to any inujuries.
The Jacksons appeared Tuesday night on CNN's Larry King Live at 9PM Eastern Time. It was mentioned that Barbaro's mother, La Ville Rouge, is believed to be carrying a colt. This would be Barbaro's second full brother (his yearling brother is still un-named).
In Kentucky, fans can sign large condolence cards for Barbaro's connections, beginning on January 31 at Churchill Downs. Go to Gate 17 or the main entrance of the Kentucky Derby Museum (near Gate number 1). The cards will remain at the Downs until they are filled with signatures, then they will be delivered.
