Edgar Prado rode Barbaro in all but his first two races. It was Prado's excellence as a rider that gave Barbaro a partner who trusted what the colt was capable of, as the jockey remained patient until just the right moment to send Barbaro up to strike the lead.
2006 began with Prado losing his mother. After Barbaro's career-ending accident at the Preakness Stakes in May 2006, Prado said that the day his mother died was the hardest day of his life, but the day Barbaro's leg fractured at Pimlico Race Course was the hardest day of his career.
Prado was on a trip to ride in his native Peru when he learned the news of Barbaro's passing.
"When someone dies, the only thing you have are memories," Prado said. "We'll have great memories of Barbaro as long as we live."
