Fans were expecting to see the first Barbaro documentary on NBC Sunday afternoon, only to find an endless hockey playoff game tied at 1-1 in overtime. Then another overtime. Let's be realistic, Barbaro: A Nation's Horse couldn't have been scheduled in a more dubious time slot --that being a Sunday afternoon at 5PM Eastern, vulnerable to NHL hockey overtimes.
Why doesn't NBC think Barbaro deserves prime time when they clearly have nothing better to offer? Right now NBC is suffering from their poorest ratings in 20 years, and it's no coincidence their programming content and scheduling is horrible --fifty versions of Dateline NBC and Law & Order, idiotic game shows, and other dupes of their own programs (Studio 66 is to 30 Rock, as Medium is to Raines). Word is NBC will slide Barbaro down their programming garbage chute to CNBC. The Kentucky Derby is next Saturday on NBC, why not show Barbaro on NBC itself next Friday? This special was going to be a great promotional tool for the Derby, and the timing was no coincidence. What's more, it was to air on Barbaro's birth date. The best bet in horse racing this week was that Barbaro's special would not survive Sunday afternoon NHL playoff overtimes. Update: Barbaro Documentary moved to NBC prime time.
