Written by Gohorsepower.com
Sunday, 27 January 2008
Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg, trainer of 1987 Kentucky Derby and 1988 Breeders Cup Classic winner Alysheba, is speaking out against trainers who use prohibited substances and legal steroids alike. Van Berg is calling for more sophisticated drug testing and stiffer penalties for violators who've been getting away with sissy slaps on their wrists --or in alleged offender Jeff Mullins' case, on his Magnum PI mustache.

Thoroughbred water skiing cancelled at Santa Anita Print E-mail
Written by Gohorsepower.com
Sunday, 27 January 2008
With the synthetic Cushion Track unable to drain properly, a deluge of overnight rain and more of the same in the immediate forecast prompted Santa Anita to cancel racing Sunday and Monday, January 27-28. Weather permitting, the track will reopen this Thursday. After next weekend's races, the Cushion Track's drainage problems will be resolved with the help of Pro-Ride adding a binder to the track, and Santa Anita will reopen as soon the process is finished. In the meantime, horsemen bound for Santa Anita are encouraged to add Funnoodle to their Thoroughbred's tack.

And so, on Martin Luther King Day 2008, Curlin --named after an African American who fought for the Confederates in the Civil War-- is deservedly named 2007 Horse of the Year and Champion Three-Year-Old Male. Naming conventions aside (one of Curlin's owners can trace her own pedigree back to the man Curlin), the chestnut colt earned Horse of the Year honors with an incredible series of achievements as a three-year-old, including awesome victories in the Arkansas Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Breeders Cup Classic. Unraced at two, Curlin's third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, and second-place in the Belmont Stakes were also impressive performances. His debut start as a four-year-old is yet undetermined, but the Steve Asmussen trainee has been turning in recent works, and we can't wait to see him back in action. For now, let's watch Curlin turn on the afterburners in these replays from 2007.
