NEW YORK – May 10, 2007 – NBC's complete coverage of the 133rd Kentucky Derby (5-6:42 p.m. ET) grabbed 11.5 million viewers, its best delivery in six years, and an eight percent jump from last year (10.6 million) according to national ratings released today by Nielsen Media Research.
NBC's total program rating was a 7.5 and 18 share, up seven percent from 2006 (7.0/18). NBC's pre-race coverage (5-5:41 p.m. ET) averaged 8.4 million viewers, up nine percent from 2006 (7.7 million) and drew a 5.7/15, up ten percent (5.2/14).
As released on Tuesday, NBC Sports' broadcast of the race portion of the Derby (5:41 p.m.-6:42 p.m. ET) averaged a notable 13.8 million viewers, a seven percent increase from 2006 (12.9 million), and notched an 8.8 rating and 21 share, a five percent increase from last year (8.4/20).
Street Sense is expected to move on to the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Racecourse, Saturday, May 19. NBC's live high definition coverage from Baltimore will begin at 5 p.m. ET.

NBC will expand it's Kentucky Derby coverage this year. Not with more coverage of this year's talented athletes; not with more in-depth profiles of the jockeys, horses, and trainers, and how they got to this year's Derby. No, instead we get a half-hour special Kentucky Derby version of the relentlessly loud and obnoxious Access Hollywood, NBC's idiot talking-head celebrity "news" program, where plastic-looking rejected-gameshow-host spokes-models hammer the same five celebrity melodramas to death seven days a week. |

A million-dollar bonus is being offered to the connections of this year's 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby --if they can beat Barbaro's 6 1/2 length margin of victory. Yum! Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell), sponsoring the Kentucky Derby for its second straight year, will pay out a million dollars, divided among the winning jockey, trainer, owner, and the Barbaro Memorial Fund, if Barbaro's historic margin of victory is beat on May 5th. |

Triple Crown Productions announced on Tuesday that this year's number of Triple Crown nominees for the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes has increased to 460 after the secondary deadline.
10 more horses joined the contenders for a nomination fee of $6,000, including probables for this weekend's crucial Kentucky Derby preps. |
