Under jockey Garrett Gomez, Colonel John made his three-year-old debut his first graded stakes winner in the Grade 3, $200,000, Sham Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday. The margin of victory in a short field was only 1/2 length over a previously unbeaten San Rafael Stakes winner El Gato Malo. The number of rivals in this month's first graded Kentucky Derby prep shrank from seven to five with two scratches. We'll have to see if the Colonel will serve us some extra legs next time. |

Carrying 18 pounds more than his rivals in Thursday's Jaguar Trophy handicap, reigning Horse of the Year Curlin looked like he could just as easily have carried every horse in the field on his back. In his first start of 2008, and his four-year-old debut, last year's Preakness Stakes and Breeders Cup Classic winner got a perfect ride under jockey Robby Albardo to dominantly win the $175,000 Jaguar Trophy at Dubai's Nad Al Sheba Race Course. Curlin, trained by Steve Asmussen, will use the nearly 1 1/4 mile event as a prep for the world's richest race, the $6 million Dubai World Cup, coming up on Saturday, March 29. |

War Pass went for a brisk stroll around the Gulfstream oval Sunday, and a four-horse race broke out somewhere behind him. War Pass was bet down to a 10-cent favorite in the one-turn mile conditioning with a $60,000 purse. After Ultimate Authority scratched from the field, the 2007 Breeders Cup Juvenile champion was left to lead a field of Maiden winners and Claimers, with the exception of Jet Run, who won a 55k Stakes last August. Needless to say, War Pass finished light years ahead of all foes (7 1/2 lengths), easily completing the mile in 1:36.38. A graded Derby prep is the next target for War Pass, and could set up a re-match with one of his most worthy rivals, Risen Star winner Pyro. $2.10 Exactas, here we come! |
