Under jockey Garrett Gomez, Colonel John made his three-year-old debut his first graded stakes winner in the Grade 3, $200,000, Sham Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday. The margin of victory in a short field was only 1/2 length over a previously unbeaten San Rafael Stakes winner El Gato Malo. The number of rivals in this month's first graded Kentucky Derby prep shrank from seven to five with two scratches. We'll have to see if the Colonel will serve us some extra legs next time.
The Sham is the first graded win for Colonel John, who won the $100,000 Real Quiet Stakes last November, but finished second in December's Grade 1 CashCall Futurity.
Colonel John, trained by Eoin Harty, won the 1 1/8 mile Sham Stakes in a final time of 1.50.15.
