Two sons of Holy Bull crossed the wire closely in Oaklawn's inaugural running of the $50,000 Smarty Jones Stakes on Monday. Betting choice and Tom Amoss trainee Liberty Bull would win the one-miler for three-year-olds by a neck over Isabull. Don't take off your boots just yet, second choice Yes It's Bull, a grandson of 1994 Horse of the Year Holy Bull, finished a dull 10th in a field of 12.
Rich Young Ruler, fresh off a December Maiden win for trainer Thomas Daughn, finished third. The final time for the dirt mile was 1:38 2/5. Liberty Bull paid $6 to win, the $2 Exacta paid $48.50.
Liberty Bull tallied up his second win with the Smarty Jones Stakes victory. The colt's four lifetime starts round out with two seconds, and his next target will be Oaklawn's $250,000 Southwest Stakes on Monday, February 18.
As a bonus for Oaklawn patrons, a limited number of Smarty Jones Bobblehorse bobbleheads were given away with each paid admission Monday.
