Winning by five lengths in her graded debut --and only her second race ever-- three-year-old filly Magnificience set a new record time for the Grade 3 Santa Paula Stakes at Santa Anita on Sunday.
With Victor Espinoza on board, Magnificience's winning time of 1:46.61 for 6 1/2 furlongs is also only a second behind Son of a Pistol's track record of 1:13.71 set in 1998. Second-favorite Coco Belle was overcome late by Swiss Diva, who finished a length ahead of third in the small field.
Trained by Bruce Headley, Magnificience won her debut by 6 1/2 lengths on March 11. Headly sold his ownership in the filly following that maiden win.
