Rags to Riches is clearly one of Thoroughbred racing's best three-year-olds, and probably not just the best of the fillies. Sunday, she won the Santa Anita Oaks by 5 1/2 lengths under jockey Garret Gomez. Overcoming another wide route to demolish her competition again, Rags may be able to take on the boys in this year's Kentucky Derby.
Rags to Riches completed the 1 1/16 mile Santa Anita Oaks in a final time of 1.42.84. Silver Swallow was second, Cash Included finished third.
Trainer Todd Pletcher says the original campaign plan for Rags to Riches this season was to win the Las Virgenes, the Santa Anita Oaks, and the Kentucky Oaks. Her ability to easily win, no matter the trip, may be proving that the Triple Crown nominated filly deserves a chance to win this year's Kentucky Derby rather than the fillies-only Oaks. The Santa Anita Derby may be her next stop, and first chance to make the colts look bad.
Rags to Riches took third in her debut last season, but has won three in a row this year, impressive in every victory.
