A longshot that paid $60.60 for $2, Mike Shirreffs trainee Tiago came from way behind in the Santa Anita Derby with a determined rally that would not be denied. Tiago won by half a length over Sam P., while King of the Roxy finished 2 3/4 lengths back in third. Mike Smith was the winning jockey, reuniting with Mike Shirreffs and owners Jerry and Ann Moss, who won the 2005 Kentucky Derby on Tiago's longshot half-brother Giacomo.
Liquidity was fourth, Bwana Bull fifth.
