War Pass went for a brisk stroll around the Gulfstream oval Sunday, and a four-horse race broke out somewhere behind him. War Pass was bet down to a 10-cent favorite in the one-turn mile conditioning with a $60,000 purse. After Ultimate Authority scratched from the field, the 2007 Breeders Cup Juvenile champion was left to lead a field of Maiden winners and Claimers, with the exception of Jet Run, who won a 55k Stakes last August. Needless to say, War Pass finished light years ahead of all foes (7 1/2 lengths), easily completing the mile in 1:36.38. A graded Derby prep is the next target for War Pass, and could set up a re-match with one of his most worthy rivals, Risen Star winner Pyro. $2.10 Exactas, here we come!
Nick Zito's other trainee in the race, Web Gem--whose lifetime win is a 53k Maiden--caught second with a late run, passing the tired Maiden winners by 16 1/4 lengths. Maybe they had enough nonsense and decided to save their energy for a jump-rope contest behind the shedrow after the race. Chadwell was third, Jet Run fourth. The exotics are too ridiculous to mention.
War Pass will aim for the Tampa Bay Derby and Wood Memorial next.
