A million-dollar bonus is being offered to the connections of this year's 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby --if they can beat Barbaro's 6 1/2 length margin of victory. Yum! Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell), sponsoring the Kentucky Derby for its second straight year, will pay out a million dollars, divided among the winning jockey, trainer, owner, and the Barbaro Memorial Fund, if Barbaro's historic margin of victory is beat on May 5th.
Barbaro won the 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby last year by the largest margin since Assault win by eight lengths in 1946. The Barbaro Memorial Fund benefits equine health research, with a focus on fighting laminitis, the painful circulatory disease of the hooves which ultimately left Barbaro no chance to survive after healing from a Preakness Stakes injury to his right hind leg.
Yum! is calling the bonus, the Yumfecta (somehow named after the wager for picking the top four finishers of a horserace). The winner's purse is 1.24 million out of a total 2 million purse for the top finishers.
