And so, on Martin Luther King Day 2008, Curlin --named after an African American who fought for the Confederates in the Civil War-- is deservedly named 2007 Horse of the Year and Champion Three-Year-Old Male. Naming conventions aside (one of Curlin's owners can trace her own pedigree back to the man Curlin), the chestnut colt earned Horse of the Year honors with an incredible series of achievements as a three-year-old, including awesome victories in the Arkansas Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Breeders Cup Classic. Unraced at two, Curlin's third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, and second-place in the Belmont Stakes were also impressive performances. His debut start as a four-year-old is yet undetermined, but the Steve Asmussen trainee has been turning in recent works, and we can't wait to see him back in action. For now, let's watch Curlin turn on the afterburners in these replays from 2007.
