NBC will expand it's Kentucky Derby coverage this year. Not with more coverage of this year's talented athletes; not with more in-depth profiles of the jockeys, horses, and trainers, and how they got to this year's Derby. No, instead we get a half-hour special Kentucky Derby version of the relentlessly loud and obnoxious Access Hollywood, NBC's idiot talking-head celebrity "news" program, where plastic-looking rejected-gameshow-host spokes-models hammer the same five celebrity melodramas to death seven days a week.
This crap will go by the name of "Kentucky Derby Red Carpet Special presented by Olay Regenerist". That's right, Olay Regenerist. As we all know, It's the secret to Carl Nafzger's youthful glow, and has been keeping that sparkle in Street Sense' eyes since he won the Breeders Cup Juvenile last year. The program to air from 4:30-5:00 PM Eastern promises taped coverage of Derby parties and red-carpet celebrity interviews from Churchill Downs. So hold your bets until you get the obligatory expert picks from Tommy Lee, O.J. Simpson, at least one twit named "Brittany", and a Queer Eye.
This is not "expanded coverage", but merely an NBC programming "tie-in" to get racing fans to tune into this extra half hour. If NBC wants us to tune in more, there's plenty of racing they can add to their schedule.
