The saddle cloth worn in the 2007 Florida Derby by Michael Matz trainee Chelokee is up for auction. Ebay seller spectacularbidsweb says the Florida Derby saddle cloths are among the rarest finds for Thoroughbred racing collectors. In nine years of buying race worn saddle cloths, the seller has only been able to acquire nine from the Florida Derby, compared to 25 from the world's most famous race, the Kentucky Derby. The auction ends Monday, February 25th. Bid on Chelokee's Florida Derby Saddle Cloth HERE!
Chelokee, a son of Cherokee Run, was the horse Barbaro-trainer Michael Matz pursued the 2007 Derby trail with. He would come into the final lane of the Florida Derby gamely, only to be abruptly checked. Chelokee would finish third. Besides a lack of graded earnings, Chelokee had to pass the Derby trail while an abscess on one of his feet healed. He would return on Preakness day, to win the first running of the Barbaro Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. Chelokee would also win the Grade 3 Native Dancer Breeders Cup Stakes. He would be take the rest of 2007 off due to a minor ankle injury, and surgery to remove an undescended testicle.
Tuning up for his four-year-old campaign in 2008, Chelokee has been working out at Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida. His most recent work on February 19 was recorded as 4 furlongs in 48.60, handily over a fast dirt track. The move was the second fastest among five.
