Santa Anita's trouble-soaked cushion track will be reformulated by Australian-based Pro-Ride. Santa Anita Park President Ron Charles revealed that test results of the solution were "dramatic and extremely encouraging." As tears of joy fell from his eyes he suddenly sank into the Cushion Track for one final time, managing to crawl his way out, guided only by the glow of Bob Baffert's angelic bouncy white hair.
Soil tests conducted by the Civil Engineering Lab at the University of Southern California and in Australia by Pro-Ride revealed a solution to Santa Anita's drainage problem which interrupted the Winter 2007 meet, causing race dates to be canceled after seven inches of rainfall over three days revealed the severity of the problem.
Cushion Track Footings, the installer of Santa Anita's synthetic track was unable to solve the track 's drainage inefficiency and suggested that hardening for blistering Southern California Summer temperatures was probably what resulted in the admitedly unsuccessful Cushion Track installation for Santa Anita Park.
Santa Anita's Winter/Spring meet will continue as scheduled through April 20th.
