Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg, trainer of 1987 Kentucky Derby and 1988 Breeders Cup Classic winner Alysheba, is speaking out against trainers who use prohibited substances and legal steroids alike. Van Berg is calling for more sophisticated drug testing and stiffer penalties for violators who've been getting away with sissy slaps on their wrists --or in alleged offender Jeff Mullins' case, on his Magnum PI mustache.
In a recent interview with the New York Post, Jack Van Berg, now 71-years-old, points out that some trainers who violate the already strict drug usage rules in horse racing continue to get caught repeatedly, unthreatened by the unsubstantial penalties they've received for each offense. The article also features John Ward, trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos, and outspoken proponent of more effective medication rules. Ward believes horse racing is beginning to correct the drug problems of the last 20-25 years, with Kentucky, California, and other states planning a partial ban on steroids.
