A look at upcoming races from Easter Sunday through next weekend. It will be less than four weeks until the Kentucky Derby, with the Bluegrass Stakes and Arkansas Derby the two preps most trainers will want to make their final. The Coolemore Lexington Stakes on the 21st is one of the last chances to make graded earnings and qualify for the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on May 5th.
There's a lot of talk about major players skipping these preps now. Circular Quay being a major defection to wait until the run for the roses itself; and Larry Jones will work Hard Spun at Churchill Downs before deciding his next move--which may even be to skip the Kentucky Derby. Larry Jones thinks the Churchill Downs surface may be too much like Oaklawn's track, where the colt suffered his only defeat and was tired after works.
A limited number of tracks are open on Easter Sunday - April 8.
