Dixieland and Smarty Jones highlight Oaklawn weekend openers |

 Oaklawn's 2008 Winter/Spring meet opens Friday, January 18 with the $50,000 Dixieland Stakes, a 5 1/2 furlong competition for three-year-olds. For the first time, Oaklawn will have a four-day weekend opener, topped off on Monday by the first running of a one-mile race for three-year-olds named in honor of Smarty Jones on the Martin Luther King holiday. Now, why aren't there at least ten holidays named after racehorses yet? And if you have to work on those days you should get paid at least 5-1.
A free Smarty Jones bobblehead will be given away with each paid admission on Monday, January 21st at Oaklawn. The one-mile Smarty Jones Stakes may reveal prospects for Oaklawn's main event, the million-dollar Arkansas Derby, which is run on the meet's closing day -Saturday, April 12 this 2008 season.
Oaklawn's jockey colony will be headed by Calvin Borel and Luis Quinonez. Borel, Oaklawn's champion rider in 1995 and 2001, won last year's Kentucky Derby aboard Street Sense. Quinonez won Oaklawn's 2007 leading jockey title and could be trainer Steve Asmussen's rider of choice. Asmussen won the Arkansas Derby in 2007 with Curlin in what was only the third start for the gifted colt, Robby Albarado was in the irons.
