Eight Challengers for Louisiana Derby Print E-mail
Written by Gohorsepower.com

Liquidity and Ketchikan will challenge several veterans of this year's Risen Star, including Circular Quay, in this weekend's Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. The 1 1/16 mile contest for three-year-olds could derail or catapult any of its 8 contenders on this year's Kentucky Derby trail.

Todd Pletcher trainee Circular Quay was the beaten favorite last time out in the Risen Star stakes at Fair Grounds last month. In that race won by Notional, a rider spill in front of Circular Quay interrupted his inside route and he finished fifth from outside. Last season Circular Quay was second to Street Sense in the Breeders Cup Juvenile [NTRA replay] and Great Hunter in the laurel Futurity [NTRA replay].

Second and third from that race, Imawildandcrazyguy, and Zanjero, return; as does Slew's Tizzy--the horse who clipped heels and lost his rider last time.

Horses who could make big strides forward this time are Liquiduty, trained by Doug O'Neill; and Ketchikan, trained by Al Stall. Liquidity was beaten a length by Ravel in the Sham Stakes. Ketchikan won a one mile Allowance by three lengths in a final time of 1.37.20 last month.

Circular Quay has been installed as the 9-5 morning-line favorite.
