The First Saturday in March, 2008 brings us the beginning of the final two months of preps for the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby. Out west, Derby hopefuls will try the Grade III Sham Stakes at Santa Anita on March 1st. The 1 1/8 mile race with a $200,000 purse will match-up Real Quiet Stakes winner Colonel John, trained by Eoin Harty; San Rafael Stakes winner El Gato Malo, trained by Craig Dollase; and Reflect Times, trained by the always dangerous John Shirreffs. Not only did Shirreffs win the 2005 Kentucky Derby with Giacomo, we hear he runs with scissors and that he likes it.
Regular rider Corey Nakatani is out with a collarbone injury, but Colonel John will pick-up leading jockey Garrett Gomez for the Sham Stakes. Gomez was on board in the Colonel's maiden race, where they finished second. Last time out, Colonel John finished second in the futurity formerly known as the Hollywood Futurity, the Grade I CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park on December 22nd. That's right, CashCall--when you've foolishly gambled all your money away, CashCall loans are just a phone call away.
Coast Guard, trained by David Hofmans, will scratch out.
