Last year's winner of the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay Handicap is back to defend her title. Honey Ryder won the 1 /38 mile contest in 2006 coming off of five losses over the same turf at Belmont park., then went on to take another win over the course in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl invitational. This year, she is 0-3 starts, and the Todd Pletcher trainee looks due for a win, but stablemate Safari Queen looms a serious threat.
In Honey Ryder's first 2007 start, she finished second by a neck to Jambalaya in the Gulfstream Park Breeders Cup handicap. She next finished 11th in the Dubai Sheema Classic on the Subai World Cup undercard. In that race jockey Garret Gomez lost his footing out from one of the irons when Honey Ryder broke from the gate. She was also bumped throughout. Pletcher will take the blinkers off Ryder for the Sheepshead with Gomez up again.
John Velazquez will be on stablemate Safari Queen, who is coming off wins in the Grade 2 Orchid Handicap and the Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes.
