Grade 2 Lexington Stakes winner Slew's Tizzy leads the field of ten contenders for Saturday's Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Derby. The 1 1/16 mile event will be the Gregory Fox trainee's first test as a favorite --at 5-2 on the morning line-- after Slew's Tizzy upset Keeneland's Lexington Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths at odds of 40-. Robby Albarado will again pilot the colt at Lone Star Park's main event.
In February, Slew's Tizzy clipped heels and lost rider James Graham in the Grade 3 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds. Next, in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby he pressed the leaders, but finished seventh. He was clearly the best next time out in the Grade 2 Lexington Stakes. Bettors who don't like Polytrack winners may throw out his wire-to-wire Lexington. His only previous victory was also over Polytrack, Breaking his maiden in front-running style overa mile at Turfway Park last January.
Trainer Steve Asmussen will saddle Grade 2 Illinois Derby runner-up Reporting For Duty, the Lexington's third-place finisher Forty Grams, and Takedown in his Graded debut. Reporting For Duty has been second in his last four races, and has yet to win since his six-furlong Maiden at Hawthorne last September. Forty Grams has been third in his last three races, but started his three-year-old campaign in 2007 with a one-mile maiden victory followed by a 13-length Allowance win over the same distance --both wins at Fair Grounds. Takedown was 5th in the Winstar Derby, but has won four career starts, including his previous race; the one-mile, $100,000 Northern Spur Breeders Cup last month at Oaklawn.
