Memorial Day: The Grade 3 $400,000 Lone Star Park Handicap anchorsMonday's Lone Star Millions, a special six-stakes event. Sweetnorthersaint, last year's Illinois Derby winner, Kentucky Derby favorite, and Preakness second, was installed as a marginal morning line favorite, over Bob and John in a five-horse field full of possibilities.
Last time out, Sweetnorthernsaint grabbed the lead out of the gate, but finished second to Master Command in the Grade 3 National Jockey Club Handicap. Trainer Michael Trombetta says 'Saint and rider Mario Pino will be just behind the pace-setters this time.
Bob and John, trained by Bob Baffert and piloted by Garrett Gomez, was beaten by a neck in the Grade 3 Texas Mile, put away in 1:35 by Silent Pleasure. He also led, only to be denied in the El Cajon, two races back, last September. The horse's last win was over a sloppy track in last year's Grade 1 Wood Memorial.
Winner of this year's Grade 3 Essex Handicap, Jonesboro last finished fourth to Lawyer Ron in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap on April 7. The five-year-old horse has a front-running style, and will start from the rail. Calvin Borel will be aboard the Randy Morse trainee.
Silent Pleasure set the pace in the Texas Mile, and has won his last four starts for trainer Howard Scarberry. Tracy Hebert will be on the mount for the fifth time, and has won four races on the four-year-old colt.
Steve Asmussen charge Real Dandy makes his graded debut under Louis Quinonez. The five-year-old horse has not placed in the money since coming from behind to win a $50,000 stakes at Sunland on February 25th.
