Transylvania Stakes headlines Keeneland opener Print E-mail

KeenelandLane's End runner-up Sedgefield is the 8-5 morning line favorite for this Friday's Grade 3 Central Bank Transylvania Stakes on Keeneland's opening day. The $150,000 turf race has also attracted Bill Mott's Marcavelly, a colt with a promising record over turf.

Sedgefield's trainer, Darrin Miller is using the Transylvania Stakes to ensure that the colt has enough graded earnings to qualify for May 5th's Kentucky Derby. So far the son of Smart Strike has $100,000 from the Grade 2 Lane's End, where he finished second to Hard Spun; and $20,000 from the Grade 3 tropical Park Derby, where he finished second to Soldier's Dancer. On Friday, Rafael Bejarano will be in the irons for Sedgefield, who had a win and a second-place over Gulfstream's turf this season.

In Marcavelly's juvenile season, the colt won the Continental Mile Stakes at Monmouth, and took second in both the Grade 3 Summer Stakes and the Bourbon Stakes --the latter over Keeneland's polytrack. Edgar Prado, who rode Marcavelly in his last two starts, will reunite the team on Friday.
