Whirlaway Stakes winner Summer Doldrums makes his turf debut among nine entries in Belmont Park's $65,000 Straight Deal Stakes. The mile will also be contested by Todd Pletcher trainee and Hallandale Beach Stakes winner Twilight Meteor.
Twilight Meteor is the 3-1 morning line favorite. The son of Smart Strike last finished sixth in the Grade 2 Lane's End Stakes (won by Hard Spun). Todd Pletcher is using the Straight Deal Stakes to prepare the colt for Woodbine's Queen's Plate Stakes on June 24. John Velazquez will be in the irons for the Straight Deal.
Summer Doldrums won the Whirlaway Stakes in a romp earlier this year, but has disappointed in each outing afterwards. Following the Whirlaway, the son of Street Cry finished third in a slow Gotham Stakes won by Cowtown Cat, then fourth in the Wood Memorial won by Nobiz Like Shobiz. The Richard Violette, Jr. trainee will have Eibar Coa on board.
