Chelokee, favored by Michael Matz since his debut last fall, won Saturday's 1 1/8 mile Allowance race for three-year-olds at Gulfstream Park. With Mark Guidry on board again, the colt rallied and split foes to take a 3/4 length victory.
Michael Matz, who trained last year's Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, has three Triple Crown nominees for 2007: Chelokee, Crusader Rabbit, and Diamond Fever. Barbaro's three-year-old half-brother Man In Havana is unraced and working at Palm Meadows.
Chelokee is a son of sprint champion Cherokee Run, races for the Beechwood Partnership, and is owned by Centennial Farms (who own Corinthian and Reverberate). After his Maiden debut, he was five wide at the turn and finished second to Sam P. by 2 1/4 lengths in an Allowance at Churchill Downs on November 25th. Eddie Castro was on board that time.
Last time out, on February 11, Chelokee was third in a one-mile N1X, beaten by only a nose. The horse who nosed him out that time, Sightseeing, took the Show this time in third place. For You Reppo was second.
Chelokee paid $10.20 for every two dollars bet to win.
