Circular Quay claimed his first win since the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes last September, with Saturday's victory in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. The 2 1/4 length success over rivals in the 1 1/16 mile race at Fair Grounds should keep him on the road to Louisville and the most prestigious Derby of them all.
Ketchikan took the lead in the backstretch. Quay came four-wide around the second turn to make his bid in the finishing stretch, where Ketchikan held him off until mid-stretch. Zanjero followed last in the field of eight and made a late bid to gain third by 3/4 a length to Imawildandcrazyguy. The final time for the mile and 1/16 race was 1.43.01.
The winning trainer was once again Todd Pletcher with jockey John Valazquez piloting. Earlier in the card they captured the New Orleans Handicap with Master Command.
Liquidity, trained by Doug O'Neil, was close in second for most of the race until the stretch, and faded in the final furlong to finish in sixth.
