Trainer Todd Pletcher won his first Gotham Stakes Saturday when Cowtown Cat took the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths. Favorite Summer Doldrums finished third, just a head behind Wafi City.
Wollaston Bay set the pace, retiring it to Wafi City in the upper stretch. Wafi City left the far post of nine to press the pace from the outside before drawing off to a clear lead, but could not hold off Cowtown Cat's rally in the stretch. Summer Doldrums was three wide at both turns, and his outside bid into the stretch left fourth-place finisher Sir Whimsey four lengths behind him.
The rest finished in this order: Mint Slewlep, Longley, Wollaston Bay, How Sweet He Is, Believeinmenow.
In Cowtown Cat's second start last September, he won his maiden by 4 1/2 lengths at Belmont Park. Later, in his final sttempt last season, he stumbled at the start of the Grade 3 Nashua and finished sixth. The son of Distorted Humor made his three-year-old debut at Gulfstream this year, winning in a 6 1/2 furlong allowance. Twenty days later he was back and went off as the favorite in the Grade 2 Swale, finishing third at seven lengths behind winner Adore the Gold.
