Lava Man repeats the Big Cap Print E-mail
Written by Gohorsepower.com

Lava Man becomes only the third horse in history to repeat back to back winnings of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap, holding off a rallying Boboman with a victory of almost one length.

From the seventh post in a field of eight, Lava Man broke well and narrowed a considerably wide route by the first turn before stalking a slow pace from third. Into the final turn, Lava Man took command of the lead in familiar style, driving to a 3/4 length win in the stretch. Boboman rallied for second, while Molengao got third among a blanket contest for Show.

Corey Nakatani was in the irons once again for Lava Man's trainer Doug O'Neill. The gelded son of Slew City Slew races for STD Racing Stable.

As the favorite, Lava Man paid $3.20.
