Fresh off of nosing Stormello out of the Fountain of Youth Stakes, Scat Daddy won the million-dollar 1 1/8 mile Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The margin of victory was 1 1/4 lengths. Risen Star winner Notional, trained by Doug O'Neill, was second in the Grade 1 stakes; and Michael Matz trainee Chelokee was game for third. Stormello finished fourth.
The final time for the mile-and-an-eighth was 1.49.00.
Stormello set the pace again, leading most of the way until Scat Daddy took over in the stretch. With Stormello tiring, Notional drove to a strong second in the stretch as Chelokee looked like he could get by him.
Chelokee was taken up and swung around traffic, taking third by only 3/4 of a length. It was a little reminiscent of how he was taken up to the back of the field in his last race at Gulfstream. In that Allowance he managed to come back with an impressive rally to split horses and win.
Anthony Sciametta saddled winner Scat Daddy for trainer Todd Pletcher --who was in Dubai for World Cup races. Edgar Prado was on board, making it his second consecutive Florida Derby victory. Prado won last year on Barbaro.
Scat Daddy paid $6.40 to win. The exacta was $10.70, and the trifecta $74.30.
