Holding onto a determined lead, Teuflesberg won the one mile Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn on President's Day, defeating 2-5 favorite Hard Spun. The margin of victory was 1 1/2 lengths. Teuflesberg paid $48 to win in the rematch against the horse who left him in third place last time out, while Hard Spun was dealt his first loss in five starts, finishing off the board.
Hard Spun left the far post in the field of nine to take a wide run around both turns as far back as sixth for the first time in his career. From fifth in the backstretch, Hard Spun took off after the leader Teuflesberg around the final turn and battled for the lead from second place, only to fade to fourth in the stretch as Officer Rocket flew in for second and Forty Grams took third. The final time in the one mile race was 1.38.1--about a second slower than Hard Spun's best time at this distance.
Teuflesberg is trained by Jamie Sanders (she was a former exercise rider and assistant for Nick Zito and Dallas Stewart). Teuflesberg was jockeyed for the first time by Stewart Elliot, who previously won the Southwest Stakes on 2004 Triple crown contender Smarty Jones.
