Kentucky Derby week at Churchill Downs |

 Saturday, May 5th, the 133rd Kentucky Derby will run in Louisville, Kentucky at one of America's most prestigious race tracks. Churchill Downs opened on Saturday, April 28 with the 7 1/2 furlong Derby Trial won by Flying First Class --a D. Wayne Lukas Maiden and Allowance winner who had yet to fire in a stakes. Here's a look at this week's action leading up to the Kentucky Derby.
Churchill is open Tuesday and Wednesday with no stakes.
On Thursday, two stakes highlight the card, including a Grade 3:
Kentucky Breeders' Cup Stakes [G3]- $150,000 guaranteed- 5 f- 2 yo - dirt
Mamzelle S.- $100,000 added- 5 f- 3 yo's & up fillies & mares- turf
On Friday, it's the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks. The ladies-only precursor to the Kentucky Derby, headlined this year by Todd Pletcher's fine filly, Rags to Riches. There are fout more graded races on Friday's eleven-race card.
Aegon Turf Sprint S. [G3]- $150,000 added- 5 f- 3 yo's & up - turf
Alysheba S. [G3]- $100,000 added- 1 1/16 miles- 3 yo's & up - dirt
Crown Royal American Turf S. [G3]- $150,000 added- 1 1/16 miles- 3 yo - turf
Edgewood S.- $150,000 added- 1 1/16 miles- 3 yo fillies- turf
Kentucky Oaks [G1]- $500,000 added- 1 1/8 miles- 3 yo fillies- dirt
Louisville Breeders' Cup H. [G2]- $300,000 guaranteed- 1 1/8 miles- 3 yo's & up fillies & mares- turf
On Saturday, the 133rd running of the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby headlines a 12-race card. The 1 1/4 mile event has a total purse of $2,000,000. Five more graded events will run on Saturday.
